Be Prepared How to Pack with Kids In Tow

Heading out for your latest vacation with small children is always a difficult prospect. Kids simply seem to require so much more gear than adults do when traveling. In the long run, though, taking a vacation with your children can be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life. It is a moment in time that you and your children will look back on with a measure of fondness forever. In order to make your vacation go a bit more smoothly, though, there are several tips to keep in mind while you are packing.

First, be sure to pack a bag of things specifically designed to help combat the boredom your children will inevitably experience during the course of your vacation. Whether you will be traveling by car, plane, or ship, at some point during the journey, and possibly at some point during the vacation itself, your children will become uninterested. If you haven’t packed well, that lack of interest in the situation will become misbehavior, which can ruin any great vacation. Your boredom-buster kit can include any number of things to help keep your kids interested in the vacation itself. Try adding favorite action figures or dolls to the kit. This will give your child a taste of home.

If you have younger children, don’t forget to have plastic or stuffed animals that they play with on a regular basis. Age appropriate books for your child to look at or for the two of you to read together are always a nice addition to the boredom-buster kit. Some drawing supplies might also be important. Some companies make markers that only draw on a specific kind of paper, which may help keep your child’s travel clothes clean. It may also keep your child from drawing on the airline tray table, the walls of the hotel room, or the backseat of the car.

If you have older children, handheld video games might be a good investment. Many companies now make various learning video games to keep them away from the violence most video games hold sacred. If you intend to take a long journey in the car, most public libraries offer books or old radio shows on tape or compact disc. Try popping those in the car for everyone to listen. You could also consider spending the money to purchase a portable DVD player. Many of these have price tags at fewer than two hundred dollars, and they may buy you hours of peace in the cramped quarters of a moving vehicle. They may also buy you a quiet naptime once you reach your destination. You could also consider getting portable CD players and headphones for each child. These start at less than fifteen dollars, and you won’t have any fights about which radio station to listen to if you pack music for each kid.

In addition to creating your boredom buster kit, you need to remember to pack clothing options carefully. Small children tend to go through two or more outfits each day, and it is important to pack accordingly. If you plan to be gone more than one week, work a laundromat somewhere into your schedule. It will save you some suitcase room. As you begin to pack clothing for your children, think carefully about your destination. Think about the kinds of things you will be doing while on vacation. For example, if you intend to spend seven days at a large amusement park, the chances are good that your child needs comfortable shoes and climate appropriate clothing. Be sure to throw in an extra outfit in case the climate changes. Even if you plan to be in Texas in the middle of July, a cold evening or two could creep up, leaving your children with a need for a light jacket. If you plan to do any swimming, pack the appropriate gear. Similarly, if you intend to go camping, your outfit selection may differ from a traditional vacation.

Clothing and toys are just the beginning of your lessons on how to pack with your children. You also need to remember to bring along a few essential items. Sunscreen is a must for any time of the year. Even if you intend to go skiing in the middle of the winter, your child will need sunscreen to protect his or her cheeks. If you intend to visit the beach in the middle of the summer, you should probably take the gallon-sized jug of waterproof sunscreen.

A first aid kit is also a must when you are toting kids with you. Children always get hurt at some point. The chances are good that it isn’t serious, but if you don’t have a band-aid and a bit of antibiotic ointment on hand, you may have to send someone to find a drug store. Likewise, kids tend to get sick more often than adults do. Packing some acetaminophen and other necessary over-the-counter remedies is a good idea for the whole family, not just your small children. Check with your doctor about good over-the-counter medications to include in your first aid kit.

Take a bit of extra time to pack your bags, and your vacation with Junior will truly be a success.
