How often have you heard your friends talk about their wonderful cruise experience, the time they spent in exotic locations, the amount of exquisite foods they have eaten, and the memories they have that will last a lifetime? How often have you wished that you, too, could participate in the cruise experience, only to remind yourself that you will quite possibly never be able to participate in this form of travel because of perceived insurmountable odds? What is holding you back is a disability and ten or fifteen years ago you would have been correct in assuming that special needs are a barrier to cruise travel. Yet these days, accommodating cruise ship adventures are well within your reach.

If you have a chronic medical condition, such as a dependence on oxygen, or even life sustaining drugs such as Insulin or heart medication, please be sure to let your travel agent know in advance. This will permit for communication with the cruise lines physician who will probably want to stock up on those medications such in case that you run out, or your supply gets lost or spoiled. Additionally, please be aware that some cruise lines may not allow you to bring your own oxygen tanks on board, but instead will ask you to utilize one of their medical suppliers who will set up a tank for you on board. This will ensure that no faulty equipment is brought on board, yet for you this means a bit more of a headache, since you will need to be in communication not only with your physician who needs to send over the order, but also with the cruise line as well as the oxygen provider to make sure that everything is ready to go for your trip.
If you are physically disabled, you will probably want to travel with a caregiver. While you may be able to get around well by yourself, you still need to be able to participate in the emergency drills and, should there be a real emergency, you will need to be able to access the lifeboats quickly. A caregiver will be able to assist you in these situations, and the minutes you save may not only save your own life, but may very well also save the lives of other passengers who are holding up the lifeboat while waiting for you.
Many cruise lines now offer rooms that are specifically designed for those who are wheelchair dependent, or who may be using a motorized scooter to get around. Be sure to shop around. Some of these ships will offer the rooms to be inside rooms only, while other may offer an outside option as well. It pays to do your homework to get the best deal you want as well as the most comfortable accommodation you desire. Once again, your travel agent will have a wealth of information for you.
Keep in mind that many cruise ships rely on third party vendors to transport their passengers from the ship to shore for a day excursion. Depending on the location, these vendors may not always use accessible boats. Similarly, their docking mechanisms may not allow for wheelchair access. Ideally, your travel agent will be able to alert you to the number of stops you may be missing. Since many of these vendors operate independently from the cruise line, the company will have very little input with respect to their boats.
For those passengers who will bring an animal on board, such as a seeing eye dog, it is important to remember that the animals vaccinations need to be up to date, and proof of such vaccinations needs to be on your person at all times. While cruise ships will not have any problem with your animal, some ports may not permit the animal to leave the ship if proof of immunization is not readily available. Again, this is entirely out of the control of the individual cruise line, but you may be able to find out the requirements that different countries have by contacting the Department of Agriculture, or simply asking your veterinarian.
As you can see, having a disability will not bar you from enjoying a wonderful cruise. On the contrary, many cruise lines have gone out of their ways to ensure that all disabilities can be accommodated. With a little bit of up front communication, you will be able to participate in your very own cruise adventure.
