Packed Like Sardines Tips on Traveling the Friendly Skies During the Holidays

You want to visit your family for the holidays. Unfortunately, so does half of the population of your town judging by the airport. However, with a little preparation, you can cut down on some of the headaches of holiday travel and …

All-Inclusive Travel Takes the Guess Work Out of Tipping

Are you considering purchasing one of many popular ‘all-inclusive’ travel packages? These types of everything-in-one-package vacations are growing in popularity, because they take the guesswork out of travel. Let’s face it: nobody will ever claim that budgeting for a vacation is fun. One of the greatest assets of an all-inclusive vacation package is that there is almost no day-to-day budgeting involved. You simply pay the price of your package, and relax. But despite these obvious assets, the all-inclusive travel package can also have its downsides. Here are the five best reasons to purchase an all-inclusive travel package, and three things you may want to consider before committing to this type of vacation

Why should you consider an all-inclusive travel package?

1. No guesswork, footwork, or extensive planning required. Most people travel on a budget, meaning that all travel expenses (transportation, food, attractions, souvenirs, etc.) must be constantly calculated so that you won’t go too far over budget. Perhaps the greatest attraction of an all-inclusive travel package is that you can throw the calculator out the window. Once you’ve paid for your trip, you no longer have to worry about paying for food, (most) transportation, or entertainment. Most people find this very attractive, because it reduces the stress out of planning and paying for your vacation.

2. Tipping woes are not an issue. Are you the type of traveler that frets over tipping? Does the mere idea of tipping cause you to break into a sweat? The all-inclusive package takes the tipping stress out of your vacation. For the most part, tipping is not necessary at most all-inclusive resorts. In fact, tipping is not allowed at many resorts.

3. Food and drinks are included. Are you the type of traveler who enjoys splurging a bit? Especially if enjoy feasting and drinking, the all-inclusive vacation package may be right up your alley. All drinks are included in these packages, which can save you a lot of money in the long run.

4. Peace of mind for the security-minded. Many travelers are attracted to the security of staying at an all-inclusive resort. If you are a cautious traveler, an all-inclusive vacation package is perfect for you. Most resorts are highly secure, allowing access only to guests. You are able to eat, drink, and enjoy nightly entertainment without the risks of heading out to unknown neighborhoods at night.

5. A vacation tailored to your needs and interests. Many travelers are attracted to all-inclusive vacation resorts because they cater to their guest’s interests and needs. Families can find special resorts geared to the specific needs and interests of families. There are also resorts that cater specifically to older guests, gays, singles, and other groups.

Obviously, all-inclusive vacations are attractive for several reasons. But what are some of the reasons you might not want to purchase one of these popular packages?

1. Not enough stimulation for the adventurous traveler. Are you the type of traveler who sleeps in airports, stays in hostels, and likes to feast on authentic local fare? If you are a bit on the adventurous side, you may find popular all-inclusive packages lacking in stimulation.

2. All-inclusive vacations packages can be costly. Although some packages are budget-friendly, others can be quite costly. In order to determine if an all-inclusive package is right for you, you must do a cost-benefit analysis. Are you the type who likes to eat all day, or do you survive on snacks or small salads? Are you a drinker? If you are not a big eater and drinker, an all-inclusive vacation package may not prove a bargain for you.

3. Not enough diversity in entertainment, dining, or attractions. If you are considering an all-inclusive vacation, be wary about the resort you choose. You don’t want to choose a resort that offers a limited amount of dining, entertainment, or amenities. After all, if you are paying extra to have everything included, you want to make sure there are a range of activities and dining options to keep everyone in your group satisfied.

Seven Tips to Choosing the Best Budget Vacation for your Family

Pack It In How to Maximize your Suitcase Space

So the plane tickets are bought, the hotel room reserved, and the dog sitter was called. All that is left to do before you leave for your vacation is to pack your suitcase. But when you are going away, especially for a longer trip, you might feel the need to take half your house with you. Heres how to maximize your suitcase space.

First, it is important to know what to bring. Your best bet is to bring layers that way you are not trying to play weatherman and guess what the temperature will be. Stick with basic colors that coordinate so that you can mix and match. Consider taking a small bottle or samples of laundry detergent and doing hand washing in your room or use the hotels laundry service if they have one. Underwear and light clothing in particular will dry quickly. Try to save space and bring only one extra pair of shoes. Remember you will also have the ones that you wear on the plane. Choose neutral colors of makeup and only take the basics with you not your whole collection. Consider buying travel sizes of your favorite toiletries, or getting smaller bottles and filling them from your supply at home. Or better yet, wait until you get to your destination to buy the basics. Chances are there will be a drugstore where you can buy things such as shampoo and toothpaste. If you are not on business, keep electronics like laptops to a minimum. Many places you can find cyber cafes or computer rooms where you can rent one for those quick email checks. Same thing goes for hairdryers most hotels will have one available. Do not forget to clean out your purse you arent going to be able to use your frequent buyer or library cards while you are gone, so why take them with you?

Once you have decided what you absolutely must take with you, the next step is packing your suitcase. Start by putting everything out that you are taking with you bottles of shampoo up to your jacket. If you have more than is going to fit, now is an additional time to sort through and discard items that you will not really need or that you can easily purchase.

Next put all of the heavy items at the bottom of your suitcase. This includes, but is not limited to, your extra pair of shoes, toiletry bag, and large travel books. Double check as you are packing if this is stuff that you cannot live without. Also be cautious that you are not packing too many heavy items. You do not want to go over the weight limit and have to pay an additional fee.

Next, roll your clothes to reduce wrinkles and allow more to fit into your suitcase. If you are carrying multiple layers, roll light shirts inside of heavy ones for larger rolls with fewer wrinkles. You may need to fold some clothing in half in order to have a manageable sized roll.

Before you put your rolls in the bag, add anything that wasnt rolled. This would include heavy jeans or bulky sweaters. Limit the amount of these items that you take with you, as they are space eaters. If you are certain that you can purchase it at your destination, consider leaving it at home. Or try wearing these items onto the plane to avoid packing them at all.

Next, add in all of your rolls of clothing. Your suitcase should close easily. If not, unpack, and rethink what you are taking with you and what you can leave behind. If you have a bathroom scale, try weighing your suitcase to make sure that it falls under your airlines maximum requirements so that you are not stuck with additional fees.

Do not forget those outer pockets! If your bag is going on the plane with you, these are perfect for things like your tickets, passport, and/or wallet. If it is being checked, do not use these pockets for anything valuable, however they are great for that last minute reading material or map that you wanted to take with you.

With a little planning and a little organization, you will have a comfortably packed suitcase that will cover all of your needs. Happy traveling!

Seven Tips to Choosing the Best Budget Vacation for your Family

Several Secrets to Securing Low Cost Airfare

If you plan to travel for business or pleasure this year, you may be concerned about the high cost of airfare. The price of plane tickets have been on the rise for many years, but with the increased security of these times, the prices only continues to skyrocket. Between the costs airliners must pay security officials to check baggage and people entering the plane for dangerous weapons and devices and the ever-increasing price of airline fuel, it is a wonder that most people don’t have to re-mortgage their homes just to fly the friendly skies these days. Plane travel, though, for many is the only way to vacation. If you live on the East coast but want to vacation on the West coast, it might take you nearly a week to travel that distance by car. By plane, you can be there in less than a day, including any layovers you might have to deal with. As a result, plane travel is simply more convenient for most. Finding the money to get on the airline can be a bit easier if you follow these simple tips.

One of the best ways to save money on airfare is to be flexible with the dates you plan to travel. If you only have one date, which you can use for traveling time to your destination, the chances are quite good that you will pay hundreds more just for the tickets on that particular date. If, however, you have a range of possible dates you can fly in and out of your destination, you could save quite a bit of money. Many travel websites, including Orbitz and Travelocity, have the option of finding the lowest airfare according to your flexible date option, making it much easier to shop around for the fares that will save you the most cash in the long run. You can even sign up for programs that will watch various airline fares for you on the dates you select. They will then notify you when a great deal comes along that you simply cannot miss. Some airlines even send out a weekly e-mail notification to interested parties of under-booked flights, which have discounted fares. If you are interested in traveling with a specific airline, this can be a really good option for you.

Another way to save some money on your airfare for your next business trip or family vacation is to book as far ahead in advance as possible. If you can book your flight two to three weeks in advance, you will save much more money on your airline fare than you might if you were only able to book a day or two in advance. If you intend to fly on an international basis, it is even more important that you book as far ahead as possible. Most airlines recommend that you allow at least thirty days to book the best international airline fare rates possible.

Another great way to save some cash on your next airline ticket purchase is to fly during the week if possible. Airlines tend to have higher prices on the weekend fares because more people tend to travel on a weekend. If you choose to fly during the week, usually on a Tuesday or Wednesday, you could save yourself up to one hundred dollars. Moreover, if you combine this tip with some flexible leave dates, you could save yourself up to two hundred dollars, depending on the original cost of the flight.

Another good way to save yourself some money is to try to use a smaller nearby airport wherever available. For example, if you want to fly to Dallas, if you use Love Field instead of the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, you can save yourself about fifteen percent off the cost of the total flight. Some websites, including some of the bigger names like Travelocity and Orbitz, can search the neighboring airports to help you save a bit of money on your next airfare purchase.

There are many different ways to save a ton of money on your next airline ticket purchase. Keep these tips in mind before you begin to shop for ticket prices at the various airlines.

If you would like to travel without the stress, choose a location close to home. You get the fun and experience of seeing a new place and getting a way from home, without the stress of long-distance travel. In general, traveling close to home feels safer and more accessible, making for a more fun and relaxing getaway.

3. No money exchange woes or language barriers. Long-distance travel can be expensive, especially if you choose a destination where the dollar comes up short because of currency rates. Also, traveling close to home saves you the stress of having to deal with language barriers.

So how can you get started traveling in you backyard? Here are five easy tips for finding the best places to visit near home.

1. Visit your local library or bookstore. Most bookstores, and especially the big chain stores, usually devote an entire section on ‘local attractions.’ Check out the local attractions section for ideas on where to visit. For those interested in nostalgia and history, find a book that will help you track down local landmarks and historical buildings or houses. If you are looking for family-oriented attractions, these books can easily get a good idea of travel ideas that are kid-friendly and fun for the whole family.

2. Make a list of ‘no-brainers.’ Sometimes, were get so busy and so involved in our lives that we never quite get around to visiting the most popular attractions that are in our own backyard. Some people live their entire lives in Arizona, for instance, and never visit the Grand Canyon. For your next vacation, propose to visit these ‘no brainer’ spots. Almost every state has at least one big attraction that would make the perfect ‘backyard’ vacation. Some states, such as California and Florida, have numerous such sites. No matter where you live, chances are a fun and interesting attraction is just a couple hours away.

3. If you still feel bankrupt of ideas, contact your local tourism office. Why do people visit your home state or region? If you can’t pinpoint the perfect place to visit, contact your local tourism office or chamber of commerce for travel information. This information is usually free, and can provide you with loads of travel ideas. If you don’t have a particular city or region in mind, contact the state you’re interested in exploring for tourism information.

4. Pick up a copy of the Sunday newspaper. Almost all Sunday editions of the nation’s newspapers contain an expanded travel section. Look through the travel section to get ideas. Every week, a local attraction is usually featured, complete with information on when to visit and hot to get there. This feature can be particularly handy if you are new to the area and are not yet familiar with local or regional attractions.

5. Seek recommendations from friends and family members. Especially if you are relatively new to the area, ask friends for recommendations on local and regional travel. What are the best places to go hiking? Where are the best bed and breakfasts? Natives can provide you with a wealth of knowledge and ideas about where to go, where to eat, and what to see.

While most people go to Hawaii for the beach, an equal amount of travelers long to visit the islands for the volcanoes. If you are interested in a different type of vacation, consider visiting the state to experience this part of the islands.

Niagara Falls The Promise of Romance and (tourism agency help) Family Fun on Vacation

Niagara Falls The Promise of Romance and Family Fun on Vacation

Niagara Falls has to be one of the top ten things to see when on vacation. Whether you are thinking of taking your first or second honeymoon or a family vacation, this awesome natural beauty has tons to do.

When people think of Niagara Falls, they picture huge cascades of water tumbling down. But you cannot truly appreciate the power behind it until you get up close and personal. For this, a water boat tour is your best bet. The Maid of the Mist offers tours that let you get right up next to the falls. Prepare to get very wet! Young and old alike will enjoy the magnitude of it.

For younger children, just the thought of stepping into another country can be exciting. Instead of driving, consider parking on the American side and walking over. There is a small fee for use of the sidewalk, but the exercise can help burn off some of the pent up energy from the trip up.

One of the better honeymoon getaways, the hotels offers wedding suite packages for honeymooners. If you choose to get married at the Falls, the Fallsview Casino Wedding Chapel can make all the accommodations necessary. Two chapels are available; one chapel that can take up to 25 wedding guests and a larger one that can fit 50 people. If the weather is nice, couples can even get married overlooking the Falls. Honeymooners are also supposed to be very lucky at the casinos, so plan a time to do a little gambling.

For movie buffs, check out the IMAX theater near buy. The film, Miracles, Myths and Magic lets watchers find out all about the falls while taking in breath taking scenes on the huge screens. Seeing the Falls on the big screen is nearly as amazing as seeing them in person.

Niagara Falls is quite touristy, with plenty of things to do for a two or three day visit. However, do plan to go during the summer during the winter almost everything shuts down as far as sightseeing goes. Plus the cold weather in New York and Canada does not make it an ideal place to visit during wintertime.

Some people are content with staying locally at Niagara Falls and seeing the sights. If you are planning a longer trip, or just need more to do than watch the water, you might want to combine your trip to the falls with somewhere else nearby.

Niagara-on-the-Lake is only 20 miles to the north, and offers many boutiques for those who would rather spend the day shopping. If theater is your thing, the town is also home to the Shaw Festival, with the only theater in the world specializing in plays written by George Bernard Shaw.

If you are looking for a new vice, consider following the Ontario Wine Route. There you can sample wines from several wineries until you find your favorite. Or if you enjoy taking risks, consider spending some time at Casino Niagara, a twenty-four hour a day gambling center across from the falls.

No matter what you plan to see while at Niagara Falls, if you are spending the night you should insist on a room with a view. For the best views from your hotel room, consider the Canadian side. The hotels on the Canadian side offer more heads-on views, while the ones on the American side can only catch glimpses.

For movie history buffs, consider staying at the Skyline Brock on the Canadian side. This is the hotel where Marilyn Monroe and fellow cast members stayed during the shooting of Niagara. Easy to get to, with a walkway connecting it to Casino Niagara, it offers a 10th floor restaurant with a spectacular view of the falls and rooms with king-sized beds and balcony Jacuzzis.

If you want a more modern taste in hotels, consider the Renaissance Fallsview Hotel overlooking Horseshoe Falls. A room with a double whirlpool on the highest floor offers the best view. It has a Rooftop Dining Room if you choose to make a reservation. Be sure to ask for a window seat. If you still want to gamble, take the shuttle down to the Casino.

No matter what you decide to do while in Niagara Falls, it will be a vacation to remember.

Packed Like Sardines Tips on Traveling the Friendly Skies During the Holidays

You want to visit your family for the holidays. Unfortunately, so does half of the population of your town judging by the airport. However, with a little preparation, you can cut down on some of the headaches of holiday travel and enjoy your vacation.

First thing to do is plan your flight. With this, the earlier you plan and purchase your tickets, the better. You will be more likely to get the best deals on the tickets, as well as any other accommodations you might need at the other end such as hotels or rental cars. During peak flying times flights will book up quickly, as well as accommodations at your vacation site. If possible, look for a flight that leaves midday or in the evening and during the week. Those times of day tend to be less crowded at the airport than weekends, early morning, and afternoons. It is also helpful to print up a list of other flights leaving the airport that same day, in case you are delayed and miss a connection.

Next thing to do is to get ready for the airport. When packing your bags, keep in mind that you will be going through airport security. Get a list of prohibited items from your airline and make sure that you do not have any of those on you. Pack any medications and valuables in your carry-on. Do not lock your bags unless you have one of the newer locks that can only be opened by the TSA. Make sure that all bags have identification tags on the inside and outside. Do not forget to label your carry-on bags as well, in case you forget them somewhere. Remove batteries from travel alarm clocks that tick, and do not wrap any gifts. Do not forget to put unexposed film into your carry-on instead of your checked bags so that it does not get exposed during the screening process.

Once your bag is packed, you will want to get yourself ready for the trip. Wear comfortable, layered clothing. If possible, avoid thick bulky coats and thick-soled shoes. Avoid as many metal-containing accessories as possible. This might be a buckle on belts or shoes, or excess jewelry. Also consider your carry-on to make sure that you have everything you need. Most important is your boarding pass. Do not forget to have your photo ID easily available. Bring hand sanitizer and vitamin C tablets to help prevent getting sick from all the germs. Consider getting earplugs to help block some of the noise around you, particularly if you plan to try to sleep on the plane. Staying hydrated is important, so consider bringing a bottle of water to drink in the airport to avoid purchasing an over-priced one. Hand lotion or other moisturizes will be helpful for your skin as well. Small paperback books or crossword puzzles will give you something to do while you wait and are lightweight and easy to carry.

Now it is time to leave for the airport. You will want to plan for delays. Allow yourself plenty of time to get to the airport, even if there is traffic or road construction on your way. Depending on where you live, inclement weather might also be another concern. You will want to be at the airport at an hour before your plane departs if flying nationally and two hours if flying internationally to allow yourself plenty of time to check in and get through security. Some airports may recommend additional time if they are particularly busy during the holidays. Better to be waiting in the airport for extra time than to miss your flight. If you are having a family member or friend drop you off, consider telling them to drop you off at the arrival gate if you are departing and vice versa. While it might mean a little more walking for you in the airport, it will mean less traffic arriving and leaving for your friend.

Check in as soon as you get to the airport. Make sure that everyone in your group has the boarding passes for the flight as well as the connecting ones if possible. Once you have gone through security, stay close to your departure gate. Do not be inclined to wander or you might miss your boarding call.

Once all this is done, you will be on a plane and on your way to your vacation. This is the time to relax and have fun!

Keep in Communication The Cheapest Way to Stay in Contact while on Vacation

Going on vacation is easily one of the most rewarding experiences of the entire year. The toughest part for most while on vacation, though, is staying in contact. Let’s face it long distance rates aren’t cheap. If you compound that with the varying time zones you may be experiencing during your next vacation, staying in touch by traditional phone lines is tough. There are many reasons you might need to stay in contact. Perhaps you have some upcoming deadlines at the office. As a result, you may need to stay in constant contact with your employees to make sure those deadlines will be met. Maybe you simply feel like you should spend a half hour each day checking your voice mail and responding to those kinds of messages. Perhaps you need to check on the kids each day to make sure your house hasn’t been destroyed while it was entrusted to them. Checking on the pets you left with the neighbors might also be an important factor for you. However, if you start to factor in the sheer number of costs associated with your vacation already the airfare, the hotel rooms, the food, the entertainment costs you may find there just isn’t enough left for costly contact methods. There are many other inexpensive ways to stay in touch while you’re on vacation. Choosing the perfect way can help to put your mind at ease.

One great way to stay in touch while you’re on vacation is through the use of your laptop computer. If your laptop is fairly new, you probably have a wireless card installed. If that’s the case, and you have a bit of background knowledge, you can stay in touch for free while you’re out and about during your next bit of vacation time. The primary way to do this is to find locations in the area where you will be that offer free WiFi access. Many restaurants, coffee shops, public libraries, and hotels offer you free WiFi access while you are within three hundred feet of their location. As a result, you can simply log on to the Internet, connect to your e-mail, and stay in touch with the people you need to. Even if you will be in a location without free WiFi access, many other companies offer paid WiFi access. Wireless companies like Sprint, T-Mobile, and Cingular offer day passes for about ten bucks. As long as you are within the range of one of these hotspots, you can have unlimited Internet access for the low price of ten dollars. Your access lasts about twenty-four hours with one of these companies. You can, of course, purchase more access for a fee. If e-mail is a good way for you to stay in touch, consider WiFi access via your laptop.

Internet access via your handheld computer or cellular phone may also be another option for you. Many companies offer access, for a monthly fee, via your BlackBerry, Palm, or other handheld computing device. This not only allows you to check your e-mail while you are out, it may also allow you to check your company’s project database, or check in with other companies you need to contact while you are away. This can be a great alternative to carrying a bulky laptop, and you don’t have any need to find a WiFi hotspot, because you will already be connected via your cellular service.

Another inexpensive way to stay in touch during your vacation is through your cellular phone. It is important to look carefully at the agreements of your plan, as all of the calls you will make will be charged as long distance. If your plan doesn’t cover long distance, you might consider upgrading to a different plan while you are on vacation.

If you don’t have a cellular phone, or you are looking for an even cheaper option to take advantage of during your vacation, you might consider investing in a prepaid phone. Prepaid cellular phones are an excellent short-term solution to all of your contact problems. Prepaid cellular phones have only become popular in recent years, but that popularity has made them very famous. Now you can even walk into a truck stop or your local Wal-Mart and pick up a prepaid cellular phone to meet all of your needs. Most of the phones display the minutes you have used and the minutes you have left. You can regulate your costs easily with a prepaid phone, and you will know as soon as you open the package exactly what the phone will cost you. Even if you intend to travel abroad, a prepaid cellular phone is still an option for you. You should check the specific prepaid phone you purchase, though, to be sure that international calling is part of your plan.

Staying in touch while you are on vacation may be a matter of life and death for you. If this is the case, plan ahead for your next vacation, and it is possible that you will find the right method of staying in touch for you.

Great Ideas on Packing for your Sunny Cruising Adventure

You have finally booked your cruise and are ready for the adventure of a lifetime! You are looking forward to the tables laden with scrumptious foods, the visits to exotic locations, and the rest and relaxation you will enjoy poolside. You cannot wait to finally get on board, but suddenly you realize that you do not know what to wear and what to bring. Should you pack for cold weather, warm weather, or somewhere in-between? After you take some time to take out of your closet everything you think you will need, you realize that you will not have enough suitcases to accommodate the load of clothes and accessories you see before you never mind the fact that it will take a small army to haul everything on board.

Just as you are wondering if there is an easier way to pack for your cruise, here are some great ideas on packing for your sunny cruising adventure:

Pack your important documents first. These could include your passport, visas, vaccination certificates, airline tickets, cruise tickets, insurance cards, drivers license and proof of car insurance, ATM card, credit cards, travelers checks, cash, and phone cards.

Next pack your electronics, such as your cell phone and charger, watch and extra battery, camera with extra batteries and extra film, camcorder with charger, and binoculars.

Thereafter you may wish to pack paper items, such as maps, brochures, books and magazines to enjoy during your trip, and little business cards with your e-mail address on them to give out to cruise friends, if you so desire.

Now is the time to pack your important toiletries, such as medications, specialized shampoo or conditioner, lotion, toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, sunscreen, and after sun lotion. Dont forget your contact lenses and cleaners, or your reading- and sunglasses. Also pack a small first aid kit and include some Dramamine to prevent motion sickness for those choppy days on deck. Do not forget a sewing kit to repair small tears and holes in your clothes!

Remember to remain cool, and so pack a hat, sun visor, or maybe both.

Next on the list are the clothes. Do not over pack, but instead plan ahead for the activities you will most likely encounter. If swimming is on your agenda, be sure to pack your swimming suit. Read up about the locations you will visit and look up photos on the Internet or in travel brochures. What are the people wearing? This will provide you will a valuable clue as to the weather and other conditions.

Consider also if there are occasions for formal dress, such as a dance on the ship. Are there more than one formal occasion? Your travel agent will help you understand your brochures, and will help you to tailor your expectations accordingly.

Women should pack one formal outfit complete with accessories, i.e. strapless bra and stockings, costume jewelry, and purse. Consider packing outfits in basic colors that mix and match and that go with a large number of accessories, such as scarves, belts, and purses. This will permit you to cut down on the amounts of clothes you will need to take with you. Be sure to pack sturdy walking shoes, as well as comfortable sandals, and a pair of formal shoes. If you are planning to go to the beach, be sure to bring beach shoes to prevent your feet from getting hurt on hard shells. You also need to make sure to pack some cold weather items, such as a jacket, sweater, and also a raincoat.

Men should pack a tuxedo complete with all accessories, sturdy shoes, slacks, dress shirts, golf shirts, and t-shirts, swimwear, cold weather gear, and some shorts.

As you can see, if you plan well for your cruise, you will not have to find yourself in a position of packing everything but the kitchen sink only to find out later that you do not need half the things you packed in the first place. Talk to your travel agent if you are not sure what the weather will be during your cruise experienced so that you may plan adequately for all eventualities.

Making Waves- Top Destinations Where You Can Swim with the Dolphins

Many people dream of swimming with dolphins in a beautiful blue ocean. Bottlenose dolphins are extremely social and gentle to humans. Imagine gliding along with or side-by-side with these gentle creatures. Stop dreaming and start planning. There are many vacation packages that are available to …

Special Needs? Consider an Accommodating Cruise Ship Adventure

How often have you heard your friends talk about their wonderful cruise experience, the time they spent in exotic locations, the amount of exquisite foods they have eaten, and the memories they have that will last a lifetime? How often have you wished that you, too, could participate in the cruise experience, only to remind yourself that you will quite possibly never be able to participate in this form of travel because of perceived insurmountable odds? What is holding you back is a disability and ten or fifteen years ago you would have been correct in assuming that special needs are a barrier to cruise travel. Yet these days, accommodating cruise ship adventures are well within your reach.

Here are some tried and true tips to have your cruise ship adventure, special needs and all!

If you have a chronic medical condition, such as a dependence on oxygen, or even life sustaining drugs such as Insulin or heart medication, please be sure to let your travel agent know in advance. This will permit for communication with the cruise lines physician who will probably want to stock up on those medications such in case that you run out, or your supply gets lost or spoiled. Additionally, please be aware that some cruise lines may not allow you to bring your own oxygen tanks on board, but instead will ask you to utilize one of their medical suppliers who will set up a tank for you on board. This will ensure that no faulty equipment is brought on board, yet for you this means a bit more of a headache, since you will need to be in communication not only with your physician who needs to send over the order, but also with the cruise line as well as the oxygen provider to make sure that everything is ready to go for your trip.

If you are physically disabled, you will probably want to travel with a caregiver. While you may be able to get around well by yourself, you still need to be able to participate in the emergency drills and, should there be a real emergency, you will need to be able to access the lifeboats quickly. A caregiver will be able to assist you in these situations, and the minutes you save may not only save your own life, but may very well also save the lives of other passengers who are holding up the lifeboat while waiting for you.

Many cruise lines now offer rooms that are specifically designed for those who are wheelchair dependent, or who may be using a motorized scooter to get around. Be sure to shop around. Some of these ships will offer the rooms to be inside rooms only, while other may offer an outside option as well. It pays to do your homework to get the best deal you want as well as the most comfortable accommodation you desire. Once again, your travel agent will have a wealth of information for you.

Keep in mind that many cruise ships rely on third party vendors to transport their passengers from the ship to shore for a day excursion. Depending on the location, these vendors may not always use accessible boats. Similarly, their docking mechanisms may not allow for wheelchair access. Ideally, your travel agent will be able to alert you to the number of stops you may be missing. Since many of these vendors operate independently from the cruise line, the company will have very little input with respect to their boats.

For those passengers who will bring an animal on board, such as a seeing eye dog, it is important to remember that the animals vaccinations need to be up to date, and proof of such vaccinations needs to be on your person at all times. While cruise ships will not have any problem with your animal, some ports may not permit the animal to leave the ship if proof of immunization is not readily available. Again, this is entirely out of the control of the individual cruise line, but you may be able to find out the requirements that different countries have by contacting the Department of Agriculture, or simply asking your veterinarian.

As you can see, having a disability will not bar you from enjoying a wonderful cruise. On the contrary, many cruise lines have gone out of their ways to ensure that all disabilities can be accommodated. With a little bit of up front communication, you will be able to participate in your very own cruise adventure.
